Upgrading Cisco Linksys Wireless Router Firmware (WRT54g v5) November 4, 2010

este post no tiene nada que ver con virtualizacion.    Me toco ser de aquellos que tenian acceso a internet por telefono (uuuuuuuhhhh hace tiempo de eso, de ahi viene mi cuenta de AOL), luego probe el “broadband” de Cablevision😉

tomamos la decision de cambiar luego la conexion con esa empresa telefonica que domina el mercado en Mexico (si lo reconozco, estoy enriqueciendo a Slim!!!)  . En fin, como parte de tener seguridad en la conexion, y publicar wireless en la casa, desde que estaba con Cablevision adquirimos un Router Cisco Linksys (modelo WRT54g v5), el cual hace su trabajo de manera increible.    El tema es que desde que por alguna razon, mientras no este conectado a la VPN, los videos de YouTube en ocasiones se trababan, en ocasiones se ejecutaban bien, en ocasiones ni siquiera empezaban (por supuesto que no podemos vivir sin YouTube cierto??).    Probe con todo lo recomendado aqui en el portal de soporte de YouTube (o si, tienen uno!!!) pero sin exito.

Quitamos el router y voila!!!   los videos se visualizan sin ningun problema. Asi que identificamos el issue, algo tenia el router que no permitia ver los videos en YouTube.   Asi que me fui a investigar el tema del router. Resulta que viendo los release notes de las actualizaciones de firmware, encontramos el issue!!!  (Resolves issues with certain Internet video streaming), asi que manos a la obra, habia que actualizar el firmware, y asi es como lo hicimos:

– Lo primero que se tiene que revisar, es que modelo y version se tiene del router Cisco Linksys, y esto se obtiene si se mira la parte inferior del router , para ello, la imagen inferior muestra un ejemplo del modelo y version:

en mi caso, tengo el modelo WRT54G, version 5.

– lo siguiente es bajar el update de firmware, para ello, tendrian que ir al siguiente link: http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/wireless/lbc/WRT54G. Ahi seleccionan el modelo y version, y proceden a bajar el software.

– Recomendacion: antes de proceder a realizar el upgrade, es recomendado realizar un respaldo de la configuracion del router, para ello ir al menu (desde la interfaz web de administracion) Administration – Config Management – Backup – Config.bin. Hay que guardar este archivo en nuestra equipo.

– Upgrade el firmware. Desde la interfaz web de administracion, ir al menu Administration – Firmware upgrade . Ahi escojan el archivo que bajaron anteriormente. Y presionen upgrade (una vez que el proceso se inicia, no presionen ningun link en la interfaz, solo esperen a que el upgrade termine.   y por ultimo, verifiquen que se realizo el upgrade (en mi caso, tenia version 1.0.0, y despues version 1.02.8).

y al finalizar, incluso me cambio el logo a Cisco :)     (ahhh, y ya puedo ver videos en YouTube usando mi Wireless Router, y no el de la empresa que provee el servicio de Broadband)

No puedo descargar el firmware de la pagina… ya que selecciono mi modelo me dice que no existe la pagina del link del archivo…
